At Dentists @ Canning Vale, we offer orthodontic treatment to help improve the alignment, position and function of your teeth. A straighter smile can support both your confidence and your oral health, properly aligned teeth are generally easier to clean, reducing the risk of plaque build-up, decay and gum disease over time.

Every patient receives a comprehensive clinical assessment before any treatment recommendation is made. Orthodontic treatment is not one-size-fits-all, the right approach depends on your individual tooth alignment, bite, oral health and lifestyle.

What Is Orthodontic Treatment?

Orthodontics focuses on diagnosing and treating concerns relating to the alignment of teeth and jaws. Treatment aims to gradually guide teeth into more favourable positions to improve function, appearance and long-term oral health.

Orthodontic treatment may be considered to help address:

  • Crooked or crowded teeth
  • Gaps or spaces between teeth
  • Overbite, upper teeth overlapping lower teeth excessively
  • Underbite, lower teeth sitting in front of upper teeth
  • Crossbite, upper and lower teeth not meeting correctly side to side
  • Open bite, front teeth not fully closing together
  • Rotated or misaligned teeth
  • Teeth that are difficult to clean due to crowding or overlap
  • Bite function concerns causing uneven wear on teeth
  • Jaw alignment concerns
Please note: Not every alignment or bite concern requires orthodontic treatment. The most appropriate management for your situation, including whether treatment is required at all, will be discussed following a thorough clinical assessment.

Orthodontic Treatments at Dentists @ Canning Vale

We offer two orthodontic treatment options depending on your clinical needs, case complexity and lifestyle. Retainers are recommended following all active treatment to protect your results.

Clear Aligners

Angel Align Clear Aligners

A series of custom-made, removable transparent trays that gradually guide teeth into improved positions. Virtually invisible during daily activities. Removed for eating, brushing and flossing. Suitable for mild to moderate cases in patients who can commit to consistent wear.

Fixed Braces

Traditional Braces

Fixed brackets and wires bonded to the teeth for the duration of treatment. Work continuously without relying on patient wear compliance. Suitable for a broad range of alignment and bite concerns including more complex cases. Adjusted at regular review appointments.

Post-Treatment

Retainers

Recommended for all patients following active orthodontic treatment, whether braces or clear aligners. Retainers help maintain the tooth positions achieved during treatment and reduce the risk of teeth drifting back over time. Available in removable and fixed (bonded) options.

Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontic treatment offers benefits that go beyond aesthetics. While a straighter smile can improve confidence and appearance, the functional and health benefits are equally important.

Improved Oral Hygiene

Properly aligned teeth are generally easier to brush and floss. Crowded or overlapping teeth create areas where plaque can accumulate, increasing the long-term risk of tooth decay and gum disease.

Better Bite Function

Correcting bite concerns can improve the efficiency and comfort of chewing and may help reduce uneven pressure on specific teeth over time.

Reduced Tooth Wear

Misaligned teeth can experience disproportionate wear due to uneven biting forces. Orthodontic treatment may help distribute load more evenly across the teeth and supporting structures.

Confidence and Appearance

Many patients report improved confidence following orthodontic treatment. A well-aligned smile can support self-esteem in social, professional and everyday situations.

Orthodontic Treatment for All Ages

Orthodontic treatment is suitable for patients at different stages of life. The most appropriate timing and treatment approach varies depending on age, dental development and individual circumstances.

Children

Children's Orthodontics

Early assessments can help identify developing concerns with tooth eruption, jaw growth and bite alignment. Not all children will need early treatment, our dentists will advise whether monitoring or early intervention may be beneficial in each individual case.

Teenagers

Teen Orthodontics

The teenage years are often an ideal time for orthodontic treatment. Most adult teeth have erupted, jaw growth is still active, and bite development can be assessed more clearly. Both braces and Angel Align clear aligners may be suitable depending on the case.

Adults

Adult Orthodontics

It is never too late to consider orthodontic treatment. Many adults seek treatment to address long-standing alignment concerns, improve oral hygiene access, manage bite function or prepare teeth for restorative work. Suitability depends on overall oral and gum health.

Your Orthodontic Journey at Dentists @ Canning Vale

Every orthodontic journey begins with a thorough assessment. No treatment recommendation is made before we have a full understanding of your teeth, bite, oral health and goals.

1

Orthodontic Consultation - Dr Desmond Ng or a member of our team assesses your teeth, bite, gum health and oral health. Your concerns, treatment goals and any previous orthodontic history are discussed in full.

2

Diagnostic Records - Where clinically appropriate, digital scans, photographs and X-rays are taken to map current tooth positions, assess bite function and plan treatment accurately.

3

Treatment Plan Presentation - Your individualised treatment plan is presented, including the recommended approach, estimated treatment timeframe, and a full cost breakdown. No treatment proceeds without your informed consent.

4

Active Treatment - Whether you are wearing Angel Align trays or fixed braces, our team monitors your progress at regular review appointments and provides ongoing support throughout treatment.

5

Completion - Once your treatment goals are achieved, braces are removed or aligner treatment is concluded. Your teeth are assessed and your results are confirmed.

6

Retention - Retainers are recommended following all active orthodontic treatment. Your dentist will explain your retainer options and how to care for them to protect your results long-term.

Frequently Asked Questions About Orthodontics

Is orthodontic treatment only for children and teenagers?

No. Orthodontic treatment can be suitable for patients of all ages, including adults. The most appropriate timing and treatment approach will depend on your individual dental development, oral health and clinical needs. A consultation is the best way to determine what may be appropriate for you.

What is the difference between Angel Align and traditional braces?

Angel Align clear aligners are removable, virtually invisible trays suitable for mild to moderate cases in patients who can wear them consistently. Traditional braces are fixed to the teeth and work continuously, making them suitable for a broader range of cases including more complex tooth movements. Your dentist will assess which option may be more appropriate after examining your teeth and bite.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

Treatment duration varies significantly between patients depending on the complexity of tooth movement required, the treatment option selected and individual factors such as how teeth respond over time. Some cases may be completed within several months; others take longer. A personalised treatment timeframe will be discussed at your consultation.

Will orthodontic treatment be uncomfortable?

It is common to experience some mild pressure or discomfort when teeth first begin to move, particularly after a braces adjustment or when changing to a new set of aligners. This typically settles within a few days. Your dental team will advise on managing any discomfort during treatment.

Do I need retainers after orthodontic treatment?

Yes, in most cases. Retainers are recommended following all active orthodontic treatment to help maintain the tooth positions achieved and reduce the risk of teeth drifting back over time. Your dentist will explain the most appropriate retainer option for you at the end of treatment.

How much does orthodontic treatment cost?

The cost of orthodontic treatment varies depending on the type of treatment, case complexity and individual needs. A full cost breakdown is provided in your personalised treatment plan before any treatment begins. Health fund benefits may apply depending on your level of cover, please check with your fund before starting treatment.

Will I need to see a specialist orthodontist?

At Dentists @ Canning Vale, our dentists are general dental practitioners with a clinical interest in orthodontic treatment. For patients with more complex needs, such as significant jaw discrepancies or cases requiring specialist-level management, we may recommend a referral to a registered specialist orthodontist. This will be discussed clearly during your consultation.
