Why Regular Check-Ups Matter

Many dental problems, including cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer, have no obvious symptoms in their early stages. Regular dental check-ups allow our team to detect and treat these conditions before they become more serious and more expensive to fix.

At Dentists @ Canning Vale, our check-ups go beyond a quick look in the mouth. Led by Dr Desmond Ng, we conduct a thorough assessment of your teeth, gums, bite, jaw, and soft tissues to give you a complete picture of your oral health.

What’s Included in Your Check-Up

🦷

Visual Examination

A thorough visual check of every tooth surface, looking for signs of decay, damage, wear, or discolouration that may need attention.

📸

Dental X-Rays

Digital X-rays reveal what we can’t see with the naked eye, decay between teeth, bone levels, cysts, and the position of unerupted teeth.

🔍

Gum Health Assessment

We measure pocket depths around each tooth to check for signs of gingivitis or periodontal disease, which can lead to tooth loss if untreated.

👁️

Oral Cancer Screening

A check of the lips, tongue, cheeks, throat and soft tissues for any unusual changes that may warrant further investigation.

⚙️

Bite & Jaw Check

We assess your bite alignment and check for signs of teeth grinding (bruxism) or jaw joint (TMJ) issues that can cause pain and wear.

📋

Personalised Treatment Plan

At the end of your appointment, we provide a clear summary of findings and a prioritised treatment plan so you know exactly what’s needed and why.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

1

Medical History Review

We update your medical history, including any medications, health conditions, or dental concerns since your last visit.

2

Visual & Gum Examination

A detailed visual check of all teeth surfaces and a gum assessment to measure pocket depths and check for inflammation.

3

X-Rays (if required)

Digital X-rays are taken as needed to check areas not visible to the naked eye. We minimise radiation and keep records for comparison over time.

4

Scale & Polish

Professional cleaning to remove plaque and tartar build-up, followed by a polish to leave your teeth clean and smooth.

5

Discussion & Treatment Plan

We walk you through the findings, answer your questions, and present a clear, prioritised plan for any treatment required.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I have a dental check-up?
For most people, every 6 months is ideal. If you have a higher risk of dental issues (e.g. active gum disease, high sugar intake, dry mouth), your dentist may recommend more frequent check-ups. Twice-yearly visits help catch problems early when they’re easiest and cheapest to treat.
Is a check-up covered by health insurance?
Yes, most private health funds with dental extras cover routine check-ups and cleans. We offer HICAPS instant claiming so you can process your benefit on the spot. The Child Dental Benefit Schedule (CDBS) also covers eligible children aged 0–17 for basic dental services including check-ups.
Do check-ups include cleaning?
A scale and polish is typically included as part of a comprehensive check-up appointment. If significant tartar build-up or periodontal treatment is needed, this may require a separate appointment.
I’m nervous about the dentist. Can I still book?
Absolutely. Our team is experienced with anxious patients and will take the appointment at your pace. Please let us know when booking so we can prepare for you. We offer a relaxed, pressure-free environment and explain every step before we do it.
Will I need X-rays at every visit?
Not necessarily. X-rays are taken based on clinical need and your individual risk profile. Full-mouth X-rays may be recommended every 2–3 years; bitewing X-rays more frequently to check for decay between teeth. We use digital X-rays which use significantly less radiation than traditional film.
