Implant Supported Dentures

What Are Implant Supported Dentures?

Traditional dentures rest on the gums and rely on suction or adhesives to stay in place, which is why they can slip, rock, or feel uncomfortable. Implant supported dentures work differently: they attach directly to dental implants placed in the jawbone, giving them a secure anchor that significantly reduces unwanted movement.

At Dentists @ Canning Vale, Dr Desmond Ng designs personalised implant supported denture solutions for patients experiencing tooth loss, combining the stability of dental implants with the practicality and cost-effectiveness of a denture.

Removable vs Fixed, Two Design Options

Patient-Removable

Removable Implant Denture

  • Snaps onto implant attachments
  • Removed by patient for cleaning
  • Typically supported by 2–4 implants
  • More affordable option
  • Easy to maintain and adjust

Dentist-Removed Only

Fixed Implant Denture

  • Permanently screwed to implants
  • Removed only by your dentist
  • Feels closest to natural teeth
  • Typically requires more implants
  • Maximum stability and function

Benefits of Implant Supported Dentures

🔒 Superior Stability

Anchored to implants rather than resting on gums, your denture stays firmly in place, no slipping, no rocking, no embarrassing moments.

🍽️ Better Chewing

With a secure bite force, patients can enjoy a wider range of foods, including many they’ve had to avoid with conventional dentures.

💬 Natural Speech

Loose dentures can cause slurred or clicking speech. Implant-secured dentures allow you to speak clearly and confidently.

🦴 Jawbone Preservation

Implants stimulate the jawbone just like natural tooth roots, helping to slow or prevent the bone loss that follows tooth extraction.

🚫 No Adhesives Needed

Most patients using implant supported dentures no longer need messy denture adhesives to keep their prosthesis in place.

💪 Renewed Confidence

Knowing your denture is secure changes everything, from how freely you smile to how comfortably you engage in social situations.

Your Treatment Journey

1

Consultation & Assessment

We examine your mouth, discuss your goals, and evaluate your existing denture situation. Digital X-rays and 3D CBCT imaging assess your jawbone volume and structure to confirm implant eligibility.

2

Personalised Treatment Planning

Dr Desmond Ng designs your implant plan, determining the number and position of implants, the type of denture attachment, and the sequencing of treatment stages.

3

Implant Placement

Dental implants are surgically placed into the jawbone under local anaesthesia. A healing period follows to allow the implants to integrate with the surrounding bone (osseointegration).

4

Attachment Fitting

Once the implants have integrated, the connecting attachments or abutments are fitted. These are the components your denture will snap or screw onto.

5

Denture Delivery

Your custom-made denture is fitted to the implants, checked for fit, bite, and aesthetics, and adjusted as needed. You leave with a stable, secure, and natural-looking smile.

Implant Supported vs Traditional Dentures

Traditional Dentures

Rests on gums

  • Can slip during eating & speaking
  • Requires adhesives for retention
  • Accelerates jawbone resorption
  • May need frequent adjustments as bone shrinks
  • Limited chewing force and food choices

Implant Supported Dentures

Anchored to implants

  • Stays firmly in place at all times
  • No adhesives required
  • Implants preserve jawbone health
  • More stable long-term fit
  • Stronger bite and broader food choices

🧼 Caring for Your Implant Supported Denture

  • Clean your denture daily, remove and rinse after meals if removable
  • Brush the implant attachment areas and surrounding gum tissue gently
  • Use a soft-bristled brush and non-abrasive cleaner around implant sites
  • Attend routine professional clean and implant maintenance appointments
  • Report any discomfort, looseness, or changes to your bite promptly
  • With proper care, implant supported dentures can provide many years of reliable function

Frequently Asked Questions

How many implants are needed to support a denture?

The number depends on the type of denture and your individual jawbone structure. Removable implant dentures typically require 2–4 implants per arch. Fixed designs usually require more. Dr Desmond Ng will determine the optimal number during your consultation based on 3D imaging of your bone.

Can I sleep with implant supported dentures?

If your denture is removable, we generally recommend removing it at night to allow gum tissue to rest and to allow thorough cleaning. Fixed implant dentures are worn overnight as they cannot be removed by the patient. Your dentist will advise on the best routine for your specific design.

Will implant supported dentures look natural?

Yes, your denture is custom-designed to complement your facial features, skin tone, and the natural appearance of your gums and teeth. Modern prosthetic materials create a highly realistic result that most people won’t distinguish from natural teeth.

Am I suitable for implant supported dentures?

Suitability depends on your overall health, oral health, and jawbone volume. Many patients, including older adults, are good candidates. If bone loss has occurred, bone grafting may be required before implant placement. A comprehensive assessment with Dr Desmond Ng is the best way to determine your eligibility.
