Some of the most important dental structures cannot be seen with the naked eye, or even on a standard X-ray. 3D dental imaging gives our team a far more detailed and accurate picture of your teeth, roots, jaw and bone, enabling better diagnosis and more precise treatment planning. At Dentists @ Canning Vale, we use Cone Beam CT (CBCT) technology to capture high-resolution 3D images when a more detailed view is clinically indicated. Unlike traditional flat X-rays, which provide a two-dimensional view, CBCT imaging allows your dentist to examine structures from multiple angles and in precise detail, including the depth and density of jawbone, the exact position of nerve pathways, and the internal structure of tooth roots.

What Can 3D Imaging Detect?

CBCT imaging provides detailed diagnostic information that assists with the assessment and planning of a wide range of dental conditions:
Bone volume and density for dental implant placement
Position and angulation of wisdom teeth relative to nerves and adjacent teeth
Complex root canal anatomy
Jawbone abnormalities or pathology
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) conditions
Position of impacted or unerupted teeth
Sinus involvement in dental or implant procedures
Fractures not visible on standard X-rays

When Might 3D Imaging Be Recommended?

Dental Implant Planning

CBCT imaging is a standard part of implant treatment planning. It allows your dentist to assess bone volume, identify the precise location of nerves and sinuses, and determine the optimal position for implant placement before any procedure begins.

Wisdom Teeth Assessment

3D imaging provides a clear view of how wisdom teeth are positioned in the jaw, their relationship to surrounding nerves and teeth, and whether removal carries any specific risk factors that need to be managed.

Complex Root Canal Treatment

Some teeth have unusual root canal anatomy that is difficult to assess on a standard X-ray. 3D imaging helps identify additional canals and guide treatment more accurately.

Jaw and Bite Concerns

CBCT imaging can assist in evaluating jaw joint function, bite alignment and bone structure in patients experiencing TMJ symptoms or complex bite issues.

Orthodontic Assessment

For patients considering orthodontic treatment, 3D imaging may be used to assess tooth roots, bone levels and the position of unerupted teeth that may affect the treatment plan.

3D Imaging vs Standard X-Rays

Traditional Dental X-Rays

Is 3D Imaging Safe?

Radiation exposure is carefully managed. CBCT scans involve a small amount of radiation, generally higher than a standard dental X-ray but significantly lower than a medical CT scan. At Dentists @ Canning Vale, 3D imaging is only recommended when the diagnostic information it provides offers a clear clinical benefit. We follow the ALARA principle, As Low As Reasonably Achievable, to ensure radiation exposure is kept to a minimum appropriate level. If you have any concerns about imaging, please discuss these with your dentist before the scan is taken.

What to Expect During a CBCT Scan

1 Positioning - you will be seated or standing within the CBCT unit, with a chin rest and guides used to keep your head still
2 Scanning - the scanner rotates around your head, capturing a full 3D image in a single pass that takes less than a minute
3 Immediate results - images are available for review almost immediately after the scan is completed
4 Review with your dentist - your dentist reviews the 3D images and explains what they show as part of your treatment planning discussion
5 No recovery needed - no injections or anaesthetic are required and you can return to normal activities immediately after

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I need a 3D scan for dental implants?In most cases, yes. CBCT imaging is an important part of implant treatment planning as it allows your dentist to assess bone volume and identify the precise location of nerves and sinuses before placing implants.
Is 3D imaging painful?No. The scan is completely non-invasive, you simply sit or stand still while the scanner rotates around your head. No injections, anaesthetic or special preparation are required.
How long does the scan take?The actual scan takes less than a minute. The full appointment, including setup and review, is typically around 15–20 minutes.
Do I need a referral for 3D imaging?No referral is required. If your dentist at Dentists @ Canning Vale determines that 3D imaging would assist with your diagnosis or treatment planning, it can be arranged as part of your appointment.
Will my health fund cover the cost?Coverage varies by fund and policy. We recommend contacting your health fund directly to check your entitlements. Our team can provide an itemised fee schedule to assist with your enquiry.
